There is nothing more refreshing than an Iranian cold beverage in hot spring or summer. Iranian people call cold beverages as sharbat. It is common to drink refreshing beverages and people in Iran prefer these traditional Iranian drinks than drinking bottles soft drinks and juices. These drinks have health benefits and are good for you. These recipes are given by my mother who makes these drinks often for us.
1. Sharbate Tokhm-e Sharbati (Chia seeds drink)
This drink has several health benefits but still cools your body in hot summer. There are chia seeds in this drink, water, honey, freshly squeezed lime juice and a little bit of rosewater, which is optional.
This reduces food cravings because of the high levels of fiber and help weight loss. Tokhme Sharbati is still rich in protein, vitamins and also high amount of omega-3. In Iran, they also drink this beverage for coughing because it softens your throat and of course high levels of antioxidants helps to strengthen the immune system.
2. Khak-e Shir (Flixweed seeds drink)
This drink consists of tiny reddish-brown seeds, called flixweed and with scientific name of Descurainia Sophia. Based on the traditional treatment in Iran, flixweed is very effective for some diseases, such as kidney stones. Flixweeds have detoxifying benefits for your body, it improves skin and usually people drink this when they have stomach ache.
Add flixweed (as much as you want) to water and stir it. Add squeezed lime juice and one teaspoon rosewater. Serve it with ice cubes and enjoy!
3. Sharbat-e Zaferoun (Saffron drink)
Saffron drink is very tasty and refreshing drink. It might a bit odd to think about saffron in a drink, but it is actually very good. There are also health benefits in saffron which are good for your body. It improves your mood, has a lot of antioxidant and also lowers blood sugar levels.
Ingredients for this drink are water, a little bit of honey, 4 to 5 tablespoons of rosewater, ¼ teaspoon of saffron and one tablespoon boiling water.
You need to crush saffron thread to a tablespoon boiling water and steep it for 15 minutes. After steeping it, add rosewater.
Mix water and honey in a pot over low heat and stir it. Add saffron and rosewater and simmer it for about 5 minutes. After that let it cool a little bit and put in the fridge.
You can adjust the sweetness with honey. Serve saffron drink with fresh lime and ice cubes!
