Souvlaki is a popular greek (fast) food that is consisted of small pieces of meat and sometimes green and red peppers on the skewer. There are different ways of how people eat it.
To begin with, greek people usually eat it as a sandwich. They put Souvlaki, the small pieces of meat in a pie with tzatziki or with every sauce that they like, potatoes, tomato, and onion (if they want).
This is the most common way of eating Souvlaki and this is the fast food version.
However, you can eat Souvlaki from the skewer (you can also put the small pieces of the meat out of the skewer) and serve it with salad, rice or potatoes on the dish.
The word Souvlaki comes from the Byzantine greek, the word Souvla that means skewer. Homer in Iliad mentions pieces of meat roasted on spits. This is also mentioned in the work of Aristophanes, Xenophon, Aristotle, and others. In Classical Greece, Aristophanes mentions such skewers being used to roast thrushes.
