Salty liquorice (Salmiakki in Finnish) is extremely popular in Finland among any age group. It’s unlike any other candy in the world. You can find salmiakki taste in almost anything: ice cream, chocolate, liquor, cheese, chips etc.
Ammonia chloride is the ingredient that gives salmiakki its flavor. Originally it was used in cough medicine so that children would take it more easily. But by 1930s it had been adapted into regular candy too and it has maintained its popularity.
If you haven’t tasted salty licorice before, you should start with a milder version. The candy comes in different strengths and for beginners and for people who are used to eating it. Have you ever tried salty licorice?
