6 traditional Finnish foods

In Finland we eat a lot of potatoes, meat and fish. Most of the traditional foods include some of these ingredients. I’ve listed six dishes you should try if you ever visit Finland! Some of these you might even try to cook at home.

Poronkäristys (= sautéed reindeer) is a really popular dish in Finland. We have reindeers in the northern province of Lapland and recent studies have shown that reindeer meat is really healthy. It’s high in vitamin B-12, omega-3 and omega-6. Sautéed reindeer is normally served with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam.

Finnish people eat a lot of fish, especially salmon. The most popular salmon foods are salmon soup and salmon that is cooked in the oven. Both of these we eat with vegetables on the side.

Karjalanpiirakka (=karelian pie) is a traditional Finnish salty pastry that has a rye crust and the fillings is normally rice but you can also find karelian pies with potato inside. We often eat that with butter and egg spread.

Korvapuusti (=Cinnamon buns). Finns normally eat this with their coffee, and this is traditionally served in every celebration party. And you’ll probably get to eat this if you visit any Finns house.

Ruisleipä (=rye bread) is made from sour dough and it’s part of every Finns diet. There are many varieties of this kind of bread; some of them are hard and some are soft. Finnish people barely eat just white bread and that’s why we love rye.
